Mahashivaratri Festival or the "The Night of Shiva" is celebrated with devotion in honor of Lord Shiva. Shivaratri falls on Krishna Paksha (waning moon) on the 13th night/14th day in the Hindu month of Maagha. According to one of the most popular legends, Shivaratri marks the wedding day of Lord Shiva and Parvati (Shakti). It is also believed that Lord Shiva performed the "Tandava", the dance of the primal creation, preservation and destruction on this auspicious night. Special rituals prescribed in the Shiva Purana will be performed to mark the celebration. Abhishekam with milk, yoghurt, honey, sandalwood paste and rose water will be offered to the Shivalingam while chanting of the divine mantra "Om Namah Shivaya".
