MATA KI CHOWKI : SATURDAY APRIL 17th, 2010 Link to Event Flier
|
‘MATA KI CHOWKI’ is a form of prayer offered to goddess in northern part of India. Mata Chowki is dedicated to singing 'Bhents' (bhajans), praising the Divine Mother (Mata/ Maa), who is represented in many forms like Vaishno Maa, Santoshi Maa, Durga Maa, Kaali Maa, Ambe Maa, Saraswati Maa & Lakshmi Maa. Devotees worship Mata by jointly singing Kirtans and Bhajans in her praise. This type of worship or devotion is called Chowki or Jaagran. The duration of a Chowki is usually two to four hours, whereas a Jaagran is all night while sitting in the presence of the Divine Mother (Mata).
The holy Shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi Ji is unique as it contains the holiest of holy Pindis (Stone) manifesting Mata in her three forms which are Maha Kali – destroyer of Tamas Guna (darkness or unholiness), Maha Lakshmi – provider of Rajas Guna (Sustenance, Prosperity and Well being) and Maha Saraswati - representing Satva Guna (Purity and Goodness).
A combination of these three attributes in a single Shakti (Power) is known as Mata Vaishno Devi Ji and this unique combination is what makes her revered all over the world. Each person on earth contains the attributes of Tamas Guna, Rajas Guna and Satva Guna in some degree or the other. However, to lead a full and meaningful life a balance has to be struck amongst the three. It is believed that through the worship of Vaishno Devi Ji such blessings are possible.
Generally during 'Mata Ki Chowki', devotees offer Coconut and decorated Chunri (Dupatta) to Mata. Devotees who would like to make an offering to 'Mata', please bring a Coconut and a decorated Chunri. After 'Aarti', devotees will get back their offerings with Mata's blessings/prasaad.
